I work part-time in a mixtape store here in Richmond (visit us online at www.MoreMixtapes.com), and while yes, the internet makes downloading music easy MIXTAPES still SELL. When someone hears a song on a radio, off a mixtape with no label, an “exclusive” the dj played last night in the club . . . we’re inundated daily, with people coming in singing, 3 words of a song and begging us to figure it out.
Over the past few months, customers have been coming in asking for songs from a group called P-Square. None of the customers could give a good definition, I’ve heard “Umm Africans that do Jamaican music”, “they sound african but the song is like that jamaican stuff”, “I dunno what they are, but they the shit”, and “I don’t know what they saying I just like it”. Mmmhmm, people really do ask for stuff just like that, and I’m suppose to figure it out. Thanks to YOUTUBE & GOOGLE, I can . . . (@Ms_HDP)
P-Square is an immensely popular Nigerian R&B group. Their style encompasses western sounds (R&B, Hip Hop, and Dancehall) mixed with African rhythms. The group consisting of twin brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye have 5 albums under their belt (3rd album GAME OVER sold over 8 million copies worldwide), 2 MTV Africa Awards (nominated for BET, MOBO, and numerous others), and recently signed as representatives of Konvict Muzik Africa.
They are not Jamaican, again, I repeat . . . (as if my customers will see this), they are not Jamaican nor are they “dancehall” artist. I spent about an hour listening and watching videos on their youtube and while I’m not sure what all the songs are about, overall, their sound is nice and truly incorporates many different styles into one. They have ballads, dance songs (which P-Square got their start as a dance group mimicking Michael Jackson & Bobby Brown), club hip hop, dancehall, electronic, they make music for all of their fans to like. My favorite (which I posted below) is a single off their 2011 album “Invasion” called “E No Easy”.
