Dancehall group T.O.K emerged on the scene in 1999 with a different sound, look & style which captivated the Jamaican fans and earned them three number 1 singles, “Hardcore Luva” ft Lady Saw and produced by Richard Browne, “Whoa” produced by Danny Browne & ”Eagle’s Cry” produced by Dave Kellly which immediately became Dancehall anthems.
T.O.K gained other local hits like: “Hands in the Air”, Hold On” , “All I Really Want” & “Ginseng” but in late 2000 early 2001 they became a worldwide phenomenon with the release of one of their biggest billboard singles ”Chi Chi Man” produced by Tony Kelly which made them the first Dancehall act to grace the stage on Bet’s 106 & park and the only Dancehall group to gain popularity at this international level. With this new found glory they continued to bring hits like: ” Fire Fire”, “Shake yuh Bam Bam”, “Fire Haffi Bun”, “Man a Badman” ft Bounty Killa & “Yuh a Murda” which cemented their title as Dancehall’s/ Reggae’s greatest group and took them to new horizons.
In 2003 with no record label strength they hit the billboard charts once again with “Gal U a Lead”, “Money to Burn”, “She’s Hot”, ” Solid as a Rock” & “Galang Gal” which were major hits locally and internationally and in 2005 they released another smash hit produced by Don Carleon entitled “Footprints” which was a dedication to Alex’s younger brother who was killed by gun violence that year. T.O.K became even stronger after their loss by adding more reggae to their catalog and along with their dancehall single “Hey Ladies” they dropped other reggae hits which includes ”Tears,” & “Marijuana”.
With touring getting hectic in late 2006 they decided to go on small hiatus but returned in 2007 with “No Man” produced by Don Corleon & “Guardian Angel” produced by Arif Cooper which was a another huge internationl hit for the group especially in Japan where it bacame the number one ringtone out selling Jay Z , Mariah and Britney Spears which help maintain their status as reggae Icons in Japan.
The Dancehall scene changed dramatically in 2008 as the music sounded more like Hip Hop and Rnb than Dancehall and Reggae so they decided not to go on every riddim but to carefully select the ones they liked and at the sametime this gave Bay-C and Flexx the oppurtunity to effectively push out their individual labels. Later that year the group released “Couple Up”, also produced by Arif Cooper and since then dropped other hits like: ” Good Like Gold”, “S”, “Money Christmas” which led up to their latest hit “Friend For Life”.
All in all T.O.K is still the Biggest group ever in Dancehall history, performing for thousands of fans all across the world and can easily sell out shows even without a top 10 hit because the fans cant get enough of this legendary group we know as T.O.K.
